Victoria’s Allan government will continue to deliver 1,500 homes under a controversial public housing program across Melbourne.
Around 400 social homes and up to 300 affordable homes are earmarked for Racecourse Road in Melbourne’s Flemington, with the Building Communities consortium leading development.
Meanwhile, the 800 new homes at Alfred Street, North Melbourne will include 300 social homes.
The development represents a social housing boost of 39% across two sites.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2031.
The government has been pushing ahead with a 2023 plan to replace Melbourne’s 44 high-rise housing estates that house around 10,000 people it bills as Australia’s “largest-ever renewal project.”
The state government then unveiled concept designs for a site in Carlton in November.
Demolition works have begun at Elgin Street in Carlton. Relocations are underway at other redevelopment sites at Malvern Road in South Yarra and Highett Street in Richmond, as well as low-rise homes at Anderson Court, Williams Court and Elizabeth Street.
The $6.3bn Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund claims 10,100 homes completed or underway. The government says it is on track to deliver more than 13,300 homes across Victoria.
