THE Victorian government has completed new homes in Croydon in one of the most significant housing projects being delivered under the Allan government’s Big Housing Build.
The newly completed $57 million development on Lusher Road in Croydon, around 30km east of the Melbourne CBD, is the largest development to be completed under Social Housing Growth Fund for around 3,300 new social housing homes across Victoria.
The development comprises 137 new social and affordable units, which will provide housing to up to 250 people on the ever-growing Victorian Housing Register.
State government data shows 51,455 new applications for social housing on the Victorian Housing Register in the September quarter alone.
Homelessness in Croydon has grown by 65% according to Council to Homeless Persons data, with Victoria a seeing 24% overall increase over the last five years and one in two areas experiencing growth of more than 20%.
Each of the one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes are modern and energy efficient, meaning renters will save on their power bills.
“We are getting on with the job of delivering brand new, modern and energy efficient homes for Victorians right across the state – places that everyone can be proud to call home,” said Sonja Terpstra, member for North-Eastern Metropolitan Region.
The project includes a communal garden courtyard and secure basement car park and bicycle spaces and sits within walking distance to the local shopping plaza and Eastfield Park.
Community Housing Limited is also set to host community activities based on the interests of residents at Lusher Road.
The state government is delivering more than 145 new homes in the Maroondah local government area.
“This is one of many projects around the state to deliver brand new social and affordable homes for Victorians including for many on the housing register – and these homes in Croydon are modern, energy efficient, safe and connected to community,” said Harriet Shing, minister for housing.
“Development like this is an important part of addressing the challenges of affordability and availability – as our population grows and ageing housing stock needs to be replaced, we are building more social and affordable homes in areas where Victorians need them most.”
With reports showing 640,000 Australian households are not seeing their housing needs met.
