A NEW 30-unit public housing development has opened in Tuggeranong in the ACT.
The complex is one of the largest public housing developments delivered under the ACT Government’s Growing and Renewing Public Housing program.
“Public housing tenants deserve to live in good quality homes. The homes in this development cater to a wide range of needs and are Class C Adaptable, making them suitable for people with disability and people as they grow older,” said Yvette Berry, member for Ginninderra.
“The units have also been completed with above-standard energy efficiency ratings, that will provide greater comfort and increased affordability to tenants.”
In WA, community housing homelessness services groups are calling on the government to retrofit all of Western Australia’s 42,000 social housing dwellings by 2030, with savings of $50 million possible for social housing renters’ energy bills every year by making homes energy efficient.
The development has been developed within close proximity to shops, services and transport and also sits nearby Lake Tuggeranong and surrounding parks.
“I hope that the onsite playground and range of unit sizes, from one-bedroom to four-bedroom, will encourage a diverse range of households to become a community,” added Berry.
Launched in 2019, the Growing and Renewing Public Housing program is set to deliver 1,400 renewed or new public homes by mid-2027, bringing the total number of public homes in the ACT up by 400.
With the ACT already boasting the second highest proportion of public housing in any jurisdiction in the country.
“The Growing and Renewing Public Housing program is on track to meet its targets, with more than 640 homes having already been built or bought, and another 577 in the construction pipeline,” concluded Berry.
