THE number of Tasmanians applying to the Housing Register has dropped to its lowest level in 12 months, with Homes Tasmania and partners completing over 300 social homes in months of June and July.
According to the latest Housing Dashboard figures, the number of applicants on the Housing Register for the months decreased to 4,485 applicants, reaching its lowest rate in a year.
The Housing Dashboard also shows that 123 households were supported into social housing over July, with almost 97% of these households being priority applicants from the Housing Register.
There were also a further 247 households assisted through Private Rental Assistance and the Private Rental Incentives program.
Over July, Homes Tasmania and its community partner completed 44 new social housing properties, after a record 276 new dwellings were completed in June.
In July, three new purpose‑built social housing dwellings were delivered by the Supported Affordable Accommodation Trust (SAAT) in New Norfolk, Tasmania. With the homes completing the 27 dwellings delivered by SAAT across the nine sites in the Greater Hobart region funded by the federal government.
While the MyHome Shared Equity program saw more than 200 households assisted into home ownership in the 2022-23 financial year, the program’s inaugural year.
“More than 900 long-term homes and units for people needing supported or homelessness accommodation are currently in Homes Tasmania’s pipeline of works, which will deliver more affordable homes and emergency housing options for Tasmanians in need,” said Jo Palmer, acting minister for housing and construction.
“Releasing more land for affordable residential housing is critical to our housing plan. Homes Tasmania recently released more than 200 lots of land in six residential subdivisions across the state, with about 85 per cent of these lots made available for affordable home ownership opportunities.”
Homes Tasmania and the state government plan to deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.
