TASMANIA’S Rockliff government is on track to meet its commitment to deliver 1,500 homes by June this year, as the state ups its efforts to deliver its extensive pipeline of affordable and social housing.
In an effort to address the state’s housing constraint’s the government has established Homes Tasmania and committed a record $1.5 billion to deliver 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032.
Having already delivered 745 homes at the end of January 2023, Homes Tasmania is now ramping up the delivery of the current pipeline under construction.
“To help deliver homes faster, the Government has asked Homes Tasmania to identify and address delivery challenges within the sector and local government and identify solutions by the end of April 2023,” said Guy Barnett, minister for state development, construction and housing.
“The Tasmanian Government is also actively working with the Australian Government to identify federal land which can be repurposed for housing, like Dowsing Point.”
The government will also extend its MyHome program, which offers Tasmanians the opportunity to buy a home with a deposit as low as 2%.
The MyHome program, when combined with other initiatives such as the First Home Owners Grant has so far seen 107 households enter the property market since July 2022.
“Increasing the supply of affordable housing is achieved when governments at all levels work together with industry and community sectors,” added Barnett.
While the Tasmanian government will also being asking the federal government to match its commitment to of $4 million over 6 years to help more Tasmanians into jobs and more Tasmanians into homes.
“Private developers will continue to be incentivised to invest in more housing with an extension of our Headworks Holidays program to provide relief for electricity, water and sewage charges,” said Barnett.
All this is in addition to the state government’s record investment into housing and homelessness services, having invested more than $100 more per capita than the average across Australia.
