Precast builder NXT TEC, in partnership with Western Australian Aboriginal-owned community housing provider, Noongar Mia Mia has received development approval for its residential housing complex for Aboriginal Elders and their carers.
Built using NXT TEC’s precast building technology, the complex will be built in Perth’s Woodbridge and will comprise 11 units, including seven two-bedroom and four studio units, providing secure housing for Aboriginal Elders who would otherwise not have access to culturally safe housing.
The two-bedroom units will feature open-plan living, a double-height void, and a second bedroom on the upper level, designed to accommodate carers.
All units will meet Livable Housing Gold Standards for accessibility, tailored to support elderly residents. Each unit will have its own outdoor space and garden, complemented by communal gathering areas. The complex is designed to achieve a NatHERS 7-star energy rating, with solar panels and off-peak hot water systems.
“We are excited to come together with NXT TEC to build not just houses, but homes for our Elders. This is a significant step forward in ensuring that our people have access to quality housing that reflects their dignity and heritage,” said Jasmine Kadic, chair for Noongar Mia Mia.
Natasha Di Ciano, chairman and managing director at NXT TEC said,“At the heart of NXT TEC’s mission is to provide high-quality, sustainable and affordable housing for those who need it most”.
The project will commence once the building permit is received. Up to 40 direct jobs will be created during construction.
One in eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households across Australia are facing unmet housing needs, and there is an urgent need for community designed and controlled and controlled programs to bridge the gap between First Nations housing and the rest of the country.
