WESTERN Australia’s Cook government has passed the 2,500 mark in social homes added to the state’s public housing stock as part of its $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.
The government’s investment includes the delivery of around 5,000 social dwellings in total, along with refurbishments and maintenance work to many thousands more.
More than 2,500 social homes have now been added since 2021/22.
The government said it bolstered the supply of social housing stock “in the face of skilled worker shortages and a heated construction market” through establishing a small and medium builders panel of builders pre-approved for government work, utilising alternative construction methods including timber and steel frame, modular and prefabricated construction, providing more than $200 million in grants to the community housing sector to deliver new builds and refurbish existing homes, planning reforms that cut red tape to boost housing supply, boosting the spot purchasing program, and boosting the call for submissions processes.
“Boosting housing supply continues to be a top priority for my Government and we are working with industry to deliver the housing WA needs now and into the future,” Premier Roger Cook said.
“This is a significant milestone – particularly in the post-pandemic building environment – and there are more social homes already under contract or construction.”
