THE Albanese government’s Social Housing Accelerator program will deliver 23 new homes in northern Hobart’s Chigwell via a $15 million partnership with Homes Tasmania.
The federal government will tip in the large majority of the funding with a $12 million contribution via its Social Housing Accelerator.
The project has been approved by the Glenorchy City Council with construction set to begin early next year. The dwellings will be delivered by Homes Tasmania.
The Albanese government has already delivered $50 million to Tasmania through the Social Housing Accelerator, backing the delivery of 110 new social homes across seven projects in the state, including the homes in Chigwell.
This includes a minimum of 1,200 homes for Tasmania through Housing Australia.
Applications closed earlier this year for the first round of funding for social and affordable homes under the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund and the National Housing Accord.
Minister for Housing, Julie Collins said, “Since the election, we have provided more than $145 million to Tasmania to help build more homes right across the state, and support the delivery of homelessness services.
Tasmanian Minister for Housing and Planning, Felix Ellis said, “23 new social and affordable homes is just one step closer to our target of 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032.
“But it’s more than numbers. Each home means lives transformed. The safety of four walls. A secure place for a family. The opportunity to grow.”
