HOMES for Homes has granted $100,000 to its inaugural South Australian social housing project, which will see units built in Wallaroo for low-income elderly singles and couples.
Homes for Homes opened this grant round for social and affordable housing projects last year, with another $200,000 set to be granted to social and affordable housing projects in the ACT this month. It is the seventh grant round, and the first round with funding allocated to South Australia.
The new grant recipient Community Equity Housing South Australia. Collaborating with their member organisation Copper Triangle, funds will be used to create five two-bedroom units with communal gardens and common areas.
Homes for Homes raises funds for social and affordable housing through donations from properties. Owners and renters register their property with Homes for Homes, promising to donate 0.1% of their sale price or rent to increase social and affordable housing in their area.
The South Australian grant was made possible by support from property donors, PEXA and the Homes for Homes community. Previous grant rounds have seen $1.8 million in funding granted to 21 social and affordable housing projects across Victoria, the Northern Territory, Queensland, NSW, Western Australia and the ACT, which will provide housing for over 350 people.
“Homes for Homes is a whole-of-community approach to one of the most critical social issues we face as a country,” Homes for Homes’ CEO, Steven Persson said.
“We’re excited to extend our funding into South Australia for the first time and support the creation of a new social and affordable housing project.”
