A NEW partnership between the Albanese federal government and the Tasmanian state government will see 15 new social homes delivered to Hobart as part of a $9.2 million project.
The partnership will see the federal government contribute more than $7 million in funding from its Social Housing Accelerator with the project to be delivered by Homes Tasmania.
“Programs such as the Social Housing Accelerator will get homes built swiftly, putting roofs over the heads of Tasmanian families faster,” said Carol Brown, senator for Tasmania.
The project has been approved by the Glenorchy City Council with construction set to begin in the coming months following demolition work at the site in Berriedale, with the homes expected to be completed by 2026.
“This exciting new development in Berriedale underscores our Government’s commitment to ensure more Tasmanians have a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Julie Collins, minister for housing.
“Through our historic new investments in housing, including the $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator and the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund, we will be building more homes like these in Tasmania and right across the country.”
“Our broad and ambitious housing reform agenda is working across the board – with more help for homebuyers, more help for renters and more help for Australians needing a safe place for the night.”
This comes after the Social Housing Accelerator has seen $50 million invested into Tasmania, which will help build more than 110 new social homes across the state, including at the site in Berriedale.
“As the Tasmanian Liberal Government continues to work hard to bring more housing supply online, these 15 homes in Berriedale will be a boost to Tasmania’s housing and are a terrific example of the sort of medium density infill development we want to see more of,” said Felix Ellis, Tasmanian minister for housing and planning.
“This collaboration with the Commonwealth is welcome, and we will continue to work closely with our Federal counterparts to ensure that Tasmanians have more opportunities to access the housing they deserve.”
