GROUND has broken on new public housing homes across Adelaide, while the SA Housing Authority has announced another round of construction tenders have been awarded to four local builders.
Tenders for 64 new homes have been awarded or are being finalised, with construction on 42 of these new homes already underway. Contracts have been awarded to local firms including Belroc, Vin Melisis, Urban Concept and Brazzale.
The homes are being built in Adelaide suburbs including Northfield, Campbelltown, Rostrevor, Modbury, Parafield Gardens, Taperoo, Osborne, North Haven, Ferryden Park, Blair Athol, Edwardstown, Dover Gardens, Cowandilla, Marion, Park Holme and Felixstow.
The builds – a mix of two and four-bedroom properties – are part of the SA Housing Authority’s ongoing building programs and complement the 134 builds already underway under the state government’s $177 million Public Housing Improvement Program (PHIP).
The PHIP aims to deliver 437 new public homes by mid-2026. So far, 20 homes have been completed and tenanted, 134 are under construction, with another 48 homes out to tender.
Over 2023, the final 235 PHIP homes will be tendered and commence construction.
The Malinauskas Labor government is constructing a total of 564 new public homes – comprising the PHIP properties, plus other building programs – and is halting the sale of 580 public homes planned by the former Liberal government.
Minister for Human Services, Nat Cook said the government was implementing and investing in “the first real rejuvenation of public housing in a generation”.
“Not only are we providing much-needed, safe, secure housing for South Australians who face real barriers to achieving housing stability, we are also providing a further boost for our construction sector,” she said.
South Australia’s share of the 1.2 million target for new dwellings to be built across five years from the middle of 2024 under the National Housing Accord is 16,762 per year. The government has said affordable homes at Prospect, Bowden and Playford will be a part of this, while the former Adelaide Bus Station site on Franklin Street will deliver more than 130 social and affordable apartments.
