PROPERTY legend Max Beck is leading the charge with his fellow cyclists to raise vital funds to support the Making a Difference programs at Victoria’s Portsea Camp.
Alongside his longtime mates from the Sorrento Bay Riders and other Mornington Peninsula cycling groups, Beck will hit the road on October 1st for the Annual Sorrento Bay Riders’ Portsea Camp Challenge.
The 65km for 65 children charity ride aims to raise $50,000, providing inclusive wellness and camping programs, which work to build confidence, promote healthy bodies, healthy minds, and a positive sense of self, helping 65 young people to succeed.
Not only does Max take the fundraising element of this event very seriously but also the bike riding, training some 200 kilometres a week with the Sorrento Bay Riders to prepare and to keep fit.
Beck said the ride brings our group such a sense of pride, knowing that collectively we have created an event we know will achieve so much good in our community.
“Life’s about putting back,” Beck said this week .
“It is always a great feeling helping those in need, especially disadvantaged children. To take ‘cycling with my mates,’ something I am passionate about and have the opportunity to make a difference to young people impacted by economic and social disadvantage, is incredibly rewarding,” Beck added.
“I cannot emphasize enough the importance of putting back into our communities in whatever capacity you can,” says Beck, “and that doesn’t necessarily mean in terms of dollars either, but by donating your time or your services. Every person has capacity to help change a life.”
Since 1945, The Portsea Camp has been providing amazing seaside holiday camps and programs for children from Metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Victoria.
Portsea Camp Chief Executive, Sandra Martin said the importance of events like the Sorrento Bay Riders’ Portsea Camp Challenge and the continuous support of the Beck family, and others ensures the Portsea Camp can continue its valuable work across Victoria.
Ms. Martin said the camp is an icon to our shared community commitment to Australia’s children, for more than 75 years, tens of thousands of Australian kids have enjoyed and benefited from the Portsea Camp experience.
Martin added many of the children have returned as adults committing their time as volunteers or to just re-live memories, standing at the flagpole casting an eye over the place that means so much to them.
“It’s an important commitment to show all children coming to the camp, the positive side of life; give them a belief of self-worth and confidence. That’s what Portsea Camp is all about, helping kids grow, be happy, healthy, well and above all, have fun.”
