THREE new purpose‑built social housing dwellings have been delivered by the Supported Affordable Accommodation Trust (SAAT) in New Norfolk, Tasmania.
The homes complete the 27 dwellings delivered by SAAT across the nine sites in the Greater Hobart region funded by the federal government.
“The realisation of these new social and affordable dwellings is a testament to what strong collaboration between all levels of government and community housing providers can achieve,” said Julie Collins, minister for housing, who unveiled the new dwellings.
“When we all pull in the same direction we can make real, lasting change in the housing sector to ensure more Australians have a safe, affordable and accessible place to call home.”
The dwellings were design to be purpose‑driven and practical, promoting independent living arrangements for people with disability.
“These homes will foster greater independence and accessibility for residents, as well as a more inclusive and equal Tasmania,” added Collins.
The dwellings are equipped to meet the accessibility needs of people with disability and include on‑site accommodation for a support worker.
“These affordable, accessible homes will make a huge difference to people’s daily lives, offering independence and dignity to people living with disability. But we know there’s more to do,” said Brian Mitchell, MP and federal member for Lyons.
The program delivered 134 dwellings to offer long‑term housing to those on the Tasmanian social housing priority list, which includes older people, people escaping family violence, people at risk of experiencing homelessness and people living with disability.
“This is exactly the kind of partnership the Australian Government could do more of through the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund,” concluded Collins.
The $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund is the single largest investment in social and affordable housing by a federal government in more than a decade and will build 30,000 new social and affordable rental homes in its first five years.
