THE Environment Protection Authority has given the green light for a $150 million waste-to-energy plant in Melbourne’s western suburb of Laverton, which will convert rubbish usually to landfill into electricity.
Already used in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, cheap landfill has held back the concept in Australia.
Recovered Energy Australia hopes to have the plant finished in 2022. Wyndham City Council gave planning consent last March, but the EPA also had to give approval.
The plant could generate enough electricity to power up to 20,000 dwellings.
