MYRA Salkinder will succeed John Thame as chair of Abacus Property Group from September.
Sydney-based Salkinder represents Abacus’s major investor, The Kirsh Group, and has been on the board since 2011.
Thame was founding chairperson of Abacus, created in 2002.
Abacus has appointed three new non-executive independent directors over the past two years, and is on the hunt for one additional non-executive director who will ideally join by the end of the year, following which the board will nominate a lead independent director.
The group has been increasingly cautious of market conditions in the struggling the residential and discretionary retail asset sectors. It recently sold the interests in four developments for $31 million – including the $180 million project at 512-544 Spencer Street in West Melbourne – following the divestment of the non-core Liverpool Plaza shopping centre in Sydney for $46 million.
