WATPAC has been appointed as managing contractor for the $250 million North Queensland Stadium in Townsville.
The 25,000-seat stadium will be delivered via a two-stage design and construct process. It is expected to engage with more than 2,000 people across the two phases, and have a peak sustained workforce of nearly 400 during the construction.
The design and early works program of stage one will begin over the coming week, and stage two from 2018 for completion by early 2020.
Once finished, the multi-purpose stadium will be home to the NRL’s North Queensland Cowboys, who will move from the Willows Sports Complex.
The stadium has received $140 million in state funding and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has pledged $100 million from the federal government.
Watpac was shortlisted for the contract alongside CPB Contractors and Lendlease, and will add to its rollcall of involvement with major Queensland sports venues including the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, and the Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium.
“Watpac has been a part of the Townsville community for nearly 20 years and we’re delighted to be working with the Queensland Government to deliver this significant piece of sporting infrastructure,” Watpac construction northern region manager Bryan Glancy said.
