THE University of South Australia has opened its new $83 million Jeffrey Smart building.
Construction company Hindmarsh completed the seven-storey building which comprises 12,480 sqm and will house 15,000 students.
The building was named after Frank Jeffrey Edson Smart, AO (1921 – 2013), who was an expatriate Australian painter and former University of South Australia student, known for his precisionist depictions of urban landscapes.
John Wardle Architects and Phillips-Pilkington Architects designed the building. The new centre will also provide a significant expansion of the University’s City West Library. The project was partially funded by the Federal Government.
Member for Boothby Dr Andrew Southcott represented the Prime Minister at the ceremony and together with Chancellor Dr Ian Gould, Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd and Mr Barry Pearce representing the late Jeffrey Smart, unveiled the plaque.
Hindmarsh CEO Darren Dougan said the new learning centre was a flagship project for the University.
“The Jeffrey Smart building is rich in technology, design and environmental sustainability and its striking zinc and glass facade create a strong presence in the Adelaide CBD.
“The project itself has been technically complex, particularly given its busy CBD campus location, and required Hindmarsh, the University and consultants to work closely together to set a new standard for learning environments delivered on time and on budget,” he added.
The Jeffrey Smart building is the latest innovative high profile project Hindmarsh has delivered in Adelaide. The company has previously delivered the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, the Aquadome redevelopment in Elizabeth and the Innova21 New Engineering Building at the University of Adelaide.
