VICTORIA University has gained approval for a $50 million redevelopment of its campus in Little Lonsdale St in Melbourne's CBD.
The new 32-storey building will be home to more than 25,000 students and allows the university to relocate from three other locations in the CBD.
Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the added capacity will ensure VUT continues to attract local and international students.
The tower, designed by Jackson Architecture, will meet the highest Green Star standard of environmentally-sustainable design for an education facility, including photovoltaic panels on the roof.
The cutting-edge design of the campus has been integrated to protect the heritage features of the existing building and provides a substantial area for students to use at the ground level, including a cafe and new link between Little Lonsdale and Queen St.
“The design takes the recognised heritage values of the building into account while also fitting in with the evolving character of the area, and this was a factor in deciding to approve the development,” Guy said.
