NEW home sales increased further in April, to just over 6,000 dwellings up 3.9% from March, according to the HIA.
HIA senior economist Shane Garrett said the industry’s recovery from recent record lows is encouraging.
Despite the increase, Garrett said builders and developers are also facing tighter credit conditions.
“For a recovery to be of the duration and magnitude required not only by the economy, but by Australia’s housing needs, governments of all levels, led by the federal government, need to take decisive policy action to address these obstacles,” he added.
Detached house sales rose 6.7% in the April while multi-unit sales fell 9.4%.
