THE federal government has approved plans to develop a new domestic terminal at Melbourne Airport, capable of handling up to 10 million passengers per annum.
Federal minister for infrastructure and transport Anthony Albanese gave the go ahead for the new domestic terminal facility in the southern precinct.
At more than 2,300 ha, the Melbourne Airport site is twice the size of Sydney Airport.
The minister said there is considerable scope for development and this new terminal will help Melbourne keep pace with aviation growth.
The southern precinct will create 490 construction jobs and an additional 1,450 jobs after construction.
The number of passengers coming through Melbourne Airport each year is expected to more than double from the current 29 million to 64 million by 2033.
