VICTORIA'S Department of Planning and Community Development has launched a new Future Tenders website to improve transparency and competition among suppliers to local governments.
Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell said the site will extract the best value possible from that spending is important, not just to the economy but to the local community and to the individual ratepayers.
“With an annual combined revenue of more than $6 billion, Victorian Councils are a significant contributor to the Victorian economy. Melbourne City Council alone spends $148 million on services and materials and $110 million on capital works every year.
“Well-planned and well-managed procurement can save Victorian Councils between $180 million and $350 million each year across the sector – that’s good news for local government and for all of us who pay rates and rely on Council services,” she added.
Powell said the Future Tenders webpage was developed as part of Local Government Victoria’s 2011 Procurement Excellence Program road-mapping exercise, which encouraged Councils to analyse their strategic procurement practices and plan improvements.
