THE Brooklyn Evolution Project, a collaboration between Brimbank City Council, Meinhardt, MGS and EPA Victoria, has scooped the ‘Hard Won Victory’ category at the Planning Excellence 2012 Victoria Awards.
The ‘Brooklyn Evolution’ project was borne from local community pressure over many years about dust, odour and noise impacts from the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct. The community had lost confidence in the planning system and was increasingly frustrated with the lack of action by State and local Government.
Since 2008, Council has taken ownership of the issues, working collaboratively with EPA, the community, and businesses to achieve significant improvements in the Brooklyn Industrial area.
These efforts have culminated in Meinhardt and MGS preparing a Precinct Structure Plan for Council, with full community and stakeholder consultation.
“This project represents a triumph of persistence, the realization of a long held vision, a strong desire to consult and engage…..and collaborative processes across a range of organizations,” said the Awards judges. “The award winner has demonstrated that planning using sound processes of engagement can provide actions that will deliver real gains – an exemplary ‘hard won victory’.”
