CBRE has become the first commercial real estate firm in Australia to be certified as carbon neutral by Low Carbon Australia.
Low Carbon Australia CEO Meg McDonald said the agency has been certified against the Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard.
“CBRE’s certification through Low Carbon Australia’s voluntary Carbon Neutral Program, reflects the organisation’s wholehearted commitment to sustainability and acts as a positive demonstration of what’s achievable for the industry and for its clients.
“Existing building stock is responsible for about 40% of the world’s current energy use, so there is huge potential within the property sector to reduce energy consumption, reduce costs and lower carbon emissions,” she added.
CBRE’s president and CEO Australia and New Zealand Tom Southern said the company was leading by example.
“Our organisation can make a big impact through our ability to assist our clients with sustainability initiatives. We are committed to sustainability and driving improvements in the way buildings are built, leased, managed, occupied and sold,” he said.
To achieve carbon neutral certification CBRE reduced its emissions across electricity use, air travel, fuel consumption, paper use, base building emissions and office waste. The agency also introduced new IT equipment and protocols which reduced energy consumption and paper usage.
