THE City of Sydney has kick started the $8 billion urban renewal of Green Square.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore has given the go ahead to transform the heritage Administration Building at the former Royal South Sydney Hospital site into the Green Infrastructure Centre.
“After years of careful planning and community consultation, work at Green Square is now under way.
“This is a major milestone for the growing local community. The Green Square Town Centre will be home to 6,800 residents and 8,600 workers. New infrastructure, coupled with improved transport options and retail and social precincts will transform Green Square into one of the city’s finest villages,” he added.
The Administration Building, which has been vacant for 20 years, is one of four heritage buildings earmarked for community use.
About 5,700 new homes have been built in the Green Square area since 2000, bringing in close to 11,000 new residents. By 2030, Green Square is projected to house 40,000 new residents in 20,000 new homes.
