GPT Group has commenced construction on the expansion of Wollongong Central.
GPT is undertaking the development on behalf of owner, the GPT Wholesale Shopping Centre Fund, which is investing a further $200 million in the project.
The West Keira expansion of Wollongong Central is set to take two years to complete.
CEO Michael Cameron along with the Minister for the Illawarra the Hon. Greg Pearce MLC and Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery were at the ceremony to mark the event.
Totalling 18,000 sqm, the expansion will deliver the first Coles to the city centre, 80 new specialty stores and more than 600 additional car spaces.
Cameron said the commencement of the extension is a further demonstration of the confidence GPT has in its portfolio and the continuation of robust growth for 2012.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the extension will play a significant part in the revitalisation of Wollongong City Centre.
“The Wollongong Central extension is one of the most significant developments in the Illawarra region. GPT’s investment, together with the $15 million earmarked by Wollongong City Council for the Crown St Mall Refurbishment, will be major catalysts for the transformation of the CBD, consolidating Wollongong as a leading business investment location for NSW,” he added.
