THE City of Sydney plans to buy more land to secure vital public transport corridors to facilitate the $8 billion Green Square urban renewal project.
The planned purchase of vacant property in Lachlan St Waterloo will make way for the proposed north-south light rail route, which includes a link from Central Station to Green Square Station. The City has already secured land in Amelia Street, Waterloo as part of the transport corridor.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said if Green Square is to be done right, it requires efficient transport links.
“Green Square is Australia’s largest urban renewal project and will deliver 20,000 homes and 22,000 jobs – but it could become a congestion nightmare without an integrated network of heavy rail, light rail, buses and more direct bike links.
“We are serious about ensuring Green Square delivers on its potential and call on the Federal and State governments to commit to building affordable and efficient public transport to service the Green Square community,” she added.
A subdivided portion of the Waverley Depot in Zetland is also being sought by Council, to enable an east-west boulevard to be built through the heart of the Green Square Town Centre and leading to Green Square Station.
