THE Queensland Government has awarded Abigroup the contract to redevelop the next major stage of the Cairns Base Hospital.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Health Paul Lucas said Abigroup would work alongside Queensland Health to construct the new clinical services building (Block D) and undertake a significant refurbishment of Blocks C, B, A and MH as part of the $446.3 million redevelopment.
Lucas said the first large scale construction activity on site would be the demolition of the existing car park and other nearby buildings to make way for the new seven-storey Block D.
The new clinical services building is due for completion in 2013 and will house most of the inpatient wards and clinical services.
Lucas said in other redevelopment activities, construction of the new multi-storey car park and integrated cancer care centre (Block E) was nearing completion on the corner of Grove and Lake Streets.
“Construction of the car park component of the eight-storey building is scheduled to be completed in October this year,” he concluded.
