Construction start on Top Ryde City

CONSTRUCTION has started on Top Ryde City, the largest retail project underway in Australia.

The first concrete slab was poured this month in the redevelopment of Top Ryde City which is owned by the Beville Group.

Top Ryde City is being developed by Defined Developments with Bovis Lend Lease responsible for the project management, design and construction of the new shopping centre. The project will be delivered in three phases.

Bovis Lend Lease was awarded the $470 million contract for Top Ryde City in September 2007, following six years of involvement in the master planning for the project and close consultation with the local community and stakeholders.

Lend Lease design and Krikis Tayler are the architects for the project.

Occupying a 3.5 hectare site on the corner of Devlin and Blaxland Roads in Ryde, in Sydney’s Central North, the retail component of Top Ryde City will incorporate 78,215 sqm of retail space including approximately 270 specialty stores as well as Myer, Woolworths, Big W, Franklins, Aldi and a cinema complex, with 3055 car spaces in a mix of above-ground and underground parking.

Demolition works have been completed on the existing 20,000 square-metre shopping centre and major road and infrastructure relocations have taken place.

The Top Ryde City project team is taking a proactive approach to the environment including use of environmentally friendly products and renewable resources, natural ventilation and the installation of a 240,000 litre water tank. Additionally, the project is targeting an 80% recycling of construction waste on site.

Construction is expected to take three years with the centre opening progressively from late 2009. Top Ryde City is the largest, privately-owned, mixed-use development currently underway in Australia.
