Canberra upgrade Sydney & Melbourne buildings

THE ACT Government has commissioned a $100,000 planning study to examine options to redevelop Canberra's iconic Melbourne and Sydney Buildings on Northbourne Avenue.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the planning study will look at these iconic Canberra buildings and the surrounding areas.

Stanhope said the ACT Government agreed to establish Canberra CBD Limited following requests by property owners who wanted to provide input to city centre marketing and improvements.

“While the Melbourne and Sydney Buildings are privately tenanted and the landlords are responsible for their maintenance, I believe the whole city will benefit from a vision for restoring and rejuvenating this very central area of Civic,” he added.

This study will be jointly managed by the ACT Government and Canberra CBD Limited.

“Canberra CBD Limited identified the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings as a priority area for attention and the ACT Government is pleased to assist in measures that will enhance these much-loved buildings.

“I believe that in partnership with Canberra CBD Ltd and the building owners we can restore these buildings and their surroundings to their gracious beginnings and help them regain their place as the natural, historic heart of the City’s commercial district,” Stanhope continued.

The Strategic Project Facilitation group in the Chief Minister’s Department will coordinate the study in conjunction with Canberra CBD Limited and relevant Government agencies including the Department of Territory and Municipal Services and the ACT Planning and Land Authority.
