Brisbane-based property company Metroplex has lodged plans with the Brisbane City Council to develop a $1.5 billion campus style commercial and community project.
The project, Metroplex at Westgate, has been earmarked on a 100-hectare site of the former Sanananda Army Barracks, bounded by the suburbs of Wacol, Richlands, Carole Park and Darra.
Metroplex Development’s director Rick Graf said the project will provide much-needed infrastructure and will be an investment catalyst that will open up future growth and job opportunities for the area.
He added that the site is strategically positioned to take advantage of existing and proposed public transport lines.
“It sits at the western gateway to Brisbane and is adjacent to Ipswich Motorway, Centenary Highway and Logan Motorway. It is served by two fibre optic corridors and an existing rail line, as well as the proposed Springfield line,” Graf said.
The Metroplex at Westgate site is a similar size to the Brisbane CBD. Metroplex purchased the land from the Department of Defence in late 2005 through a public tender process.
The development application process is likely to take about one year. Stage One – the Etro, campus commercial precinct and some industrial – is set to open mid 2008.
