Queensland Premier Peter Beattie yesterday thanked corporate Australia for raising $18 million for the Cyclone Larry Appeal.
“Each has given to the Cyclone Larry Appeal to help people they don’t know, and I encourage people to continue to give so we can reach the fund’s $20 million target.
“While the hard work is underway in earnest to rebuild these communities, and much more needs to be done, the appeal is providing household grants to people in need,” he added.
Beattie said staff and customers of Ritchies IGA Victoria and New South Wales stores had raised $100,000 in cash for the appeal.
“I’m told up to 50,000 customers in the two states have been contributing money through the independent retail chain’s community chest charity fund.
“On behalf of all those Queenslanders who are rebuilding after the cyclone, I say thank you,” he said.
Handing over a big cheque to the fund today was Ritchies IGA chief executive Fred Harrison who travelled from Melbourne to Brisbane for the event.
Harrison said Ritchies customers had matched the $100,000 given by the Victorian Government in an amazing show of generosity.
“Combined with the donation from IGA stores we are the 10th biggest donor on the list,” he said.
As well, 1,300 IGA supermarkets across Australia and their wholesale supplier Metcash Limited raised $130,000 in food vouchers which were distributed through stores in the cyclone-affected and neighbouring areas.
Beattie publicly thanked both companies for their donations.
“While Cyclone Larry will go down in history as one of the worst natural events in Queensland, it will be remembered for bringing out the best in people,” he said.
Donations to the Cyclone Larry Appeal can be made through any Commonwealth Bank branch, the hotline on 1800 150 411 or online www.qld.gov.au.
