Thousands of ordinary Australians have lost millions of dollars to scams, swindlers and shonky investment schemes, according to Australian Securities and Investments Commission. In an attempt to counter rogues and rip-offs merchants in the financial and property industry, ASIC is beginning nationwide seminars to teach people how to look after their money, know their rights and avoid scams and pitfalls. The seminars are free and will be held in various locations around South Australia over the next month. ”Every week, ASIC hears stories of people dealing with the heartbreak of losing their hard-earned money and retirement funds to a failed investment scheme, or dodgy scam,” an ASIC spokesperson told propertyreview.com.au. Experts from ASIC, the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Securities Institute of Australia will provide information and tips on key financial management issues such as how to set financial goals, how to choose a licensed financial adviser, how to identify and avoid scams and how to make informed decisions about investments. • If you’ve got Telstra, AMP or other shares, you’re an investor. • If you’ve got insurance, you’re an investor. • And if you’ve got plans for your financial future, you’ll soon be one!
